Registration

As a public charity, there are a number of registrations and validation services we must maintain. Here you will find related information ranging from IRS letters to validation services with which we are registered.

  • IRS Exempt Organization Classification

We are a section 501(c)(3) exempt organization characterized as a public charity as of October 26, 2020. That short sentence is the ultimate result of what turned out to be a complex process perturbed by a pandemic.

The short story follows and is required to understand the two IRS letters associated with our exempt organization classification. In October 2020 we filed our application for recognition of exemption under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. In January 2021 we received our (initial) determination letter confirming our exempt organization status as of October 26, 2020 and classification as a private foundation.

Following our initial characterization as a private foundation, in August 2021 we submitted a request to be reclassified as a public charity. Pandemic pain really kicked in for this request. In February 2022 we received our second determination letter confirming our organization is recognized as a public charity retroactive to October 26, 2020. We were rewarded for our patience.

And one final event required yet more patience, and a several calls. The IRS database publicly listing our final determination was not updated for many months longer than the estimated four weeks. This led to delays filing other required state and federal forms. But we are in this for the long game, so we employed heaps of patience once again. 🙂
