2020 November – First project preparation

Loss, pandemics, isolation, and social & cultural upheaval have a way of wearing down humans. Over the years we have observed this phenomena, especially in 2020. Our now frequent walks through the cemetery helped crystalize this idea. We observe countless people pausing, sitting on granite curbing or in the grass. One could imagine the range of thoughts coursing through their minds. After considering myriad ways to help folks ease troubled minds and bodies, we arrived at a simple, quietly impactful, solution: install benches in public places to provide a spot for humans to rest.

Be Here Now

Whilst discussing benches, designs, placement, and lessons learned with cemetery stewards, we discovered a convenient common area with great views of the James River and Richmond.

The placement of this bench has significant personal meaning. Therefore, foundation officers donated funds needed to purchase this bench and time required to prepare and construct the bench. As a fitting tribute, Trevor’s roommate assisted with final on-site installation.

We installed a temporary bench while waiting for delivery of the permanent bench.
