As GoFundMe donations rolled in from across the globe, we knew the idea to create a charitable organization in Trevor’s name could provide a lasting way to honor his empathetic legacy. So, whilst in the throes of unimaginable grief, we dug in and began learning about non-stock corporations, non-profits, and IRS exempt organization code.

Amongst other pressing requirements thrust upon survivors, we created a non-stock Virginia corporation, Trevor’s New Day Foundation, and filed for 501(c)(3) exemption status with the IRS on October 26, 2020. The pandemic was in full swing and all businesses, including the IRS, were in a state of upheaval so we expected exempt organization approval would take a while.
